Curious: the Velvet Underground in Europe

< Back to Music

Ch 4

This road movie captures the legendary original line up of the Velvet Underground – together again after 25 years – on tour. The one hour documentary, which is on permanent display in the Museum of Film and Television in NYC, follow them through Germany, Czechoslovakia, Italy and France over the summer of 1993.  By turns valedictory – the band are welcomed with open arms by Czech president Vaclev Havel as a symbol of freedom and revolution – and also questioning – will there be more music as John Cale wishes there to be? Lou Reed typically is less enamoured at the prospect, although he does share unique insights into his and the band’s place in music history. Directed by Declan Lowney, commissioned by Channel 4 and broadcast as part of the first ever night of broadcasting devoted to one rock artist in 1993.
